LKQ

From platform limitations to a scalable customer experience

LKQ is one of Europe's largest players in automotive parts, serving both individual consumers and professional bodyshops across the UK and Europe. Its e-commerce platform runs on commercetools, giving LKQ a composable foundation to build on rather than a fixed, one-size-fits-all system.

Together with supersonic, LKQ extended this platform, turning specific business needs into targeted, independent features.

LKQ improved digital commerce with supersonic and commercetools: a flexible platform for better product selection, promotions, and customer experience.

Driving digital commerce excellence at LKQ scale

The challenge

Running commerce at LKQ’s scale creates the need to tackle the development of various features and improvements simultaneously. The timelines, impact and possible risks of each development track have to be managed closely to ensure operational efficiency.

One of the main challenges LKQ was facing was that, due to their large assortment, customers were not always finding the right part for their specific vehicle. This often led to missed sales or incorrect products being ordered. LKQ needed a solution that would guide customers throughout the purchasing journey and help them find the right products.

Due to LKQ’s extensive promotion strategy, promotions are built around cart-level discounts. Since the platform does not have a native way to showcase this type of promotion directly to customers during product browsing, many offers went unnoticed. Improving the customer experience and clearly displaying active promotions became a priority.

On top of that, page speed and everyday usability required continuous attention, since even small delays can affect how confident customers feel when making a purchase.

None of these challenges could be effectively solved by a single, monolithic platform. Each required its own solution, built and released on its own timeline, including tight deadlines such as the run-up to Black Friday.

Composable by design: one extension at a time

The solution

Rather than forcing every fix into one big release, LKQ and supersonic treated each need as its own composable extension on top of commercetools.

To help customers find the right parts for their vehicle, a guided selection tool was added that walked them through choosing the correct service parts step by step, turning a complex search into a simple, confident decision.

To make promotions visible, cart discounts were translated into clear signals shown directly on product pages and in the cart, so customers could see an offer before they needed to go looking for it.

Across the platform, a series of targeted performance improvements and experience enhancements — from faster page loads to smarter handling of technical details behind the scenes — kept reducing friction throughout the everyday shopping journey.

Each of these solutions could be built, tested and shipped independently, without touching or risking the stability of the core platform.

A smoother journey, not a single overhaul

The result

The impact was visible across the platform. Page speed improved noticeably, and the website became more accessible for a wider range of customers. These enhancements positively shaped the day-to-day experience of using LKQ’s platform.

On the commercial side, order volume, order value and average order value all showed steady growth throughout the collaboration.

Just as importantly, these improvements were driven by features designed around one goal: making the shopping journey clearer. Customers saw promotions when they mattered, found the right parts faster, and benefited from a platform that continuously improved through incremental innovation, rather than one major overhaul.

What the collaboration proved

Looking back

Beyond the individual features, the LKQ collaboration demonstrates what composable commerce makes possible at enterprise scale: solving diverse challenges, from customer guidance and promotional clarity to platform performance, without one initiative slowing down another.

For supersonic, LKQ is a strong example of how composable architecture goes beyond a technical decision. It enables organisations to deliver continuous, low-risk improvements while keeping the platform scalable, flexible and ready for future business needs.
