How a multi-partner collaboration enhances webshop convenience services at Brussels Airport

A flexible back end for an enhanced airport experience

Brussels Airport Company (BAC) operates the national airport in Zaventem, one of Europe’s leading hubs for both passenger and cargo traffic. Every day, the airport welcomes thousands of travellers and continuously strives to make their journey as smooth, comfortable and efficient as possible. To support this ambition, BAC consistently invests in digital solutions that improve convenience and ease of use.

One of its recent initiatives is the development of a new webshop that allows travellers to easily discover and purchase comfort services, ranging from lounge access and fast lane passes to skip security queues, to additional services within the terminal. To bring this platform to life, BAC was looking for a future-proof commerce solution that is scalable, flexible and user-friendly. Supersonic took on the role of back-end partner and, together with several other specialised partners, helped deliver this project end-to-end.

Discover how Brussels Airport Company built a flexible, scalable webshop with commercetools and a MACH architecture, driving a 15% increase in conversions.

Outdated technology slowing down innovation

Challenge

The existing webshop was built on a traditional commerce platform that proved to be rigid and limited in functionality. Its monolithic architecture offered little flexibility, making it difficult to roll out new features quickly and efficiently. For an international hub like Brussels Airport Company, this became a barrier to delivering a smooth and personalised customer journey. BAC therefore needed a modern commerce platform that was faster, more flexible and future-proof.

MACH-based approach with commercetools and strong partners

Solution

Supersonic and BAC started with an in-depth discovery phase to clearly define business needs and requirements. Based on this analysis, a commercetools environment was selected as the central e-commerce API suite. This platform fully aligns with the MACH principles (Microservices, API-first, Cloud-native and Headless), ensuring maximum flexibility, scalability and a pay-as-you-grow model.

Roles and responsibilities within the project were clearly defined:

  • ✶ supersonic: backend development and integration coordination

  • ✶ External partner: frontend development

  • ✶ IdentIT: implementation of CIAM Tool for single sign-on (SSO) and privacy

  • ✶ nFuse: managed services and monitoring to ensure stability and support future expansion

Thanks to weekly architecture meetings, direct communication via Microsoft Teams and an agile, flexible approach, the collaboration ran exceptionally smoothly. Supersonic, IdentIT and nFuse benefited from the Cronos Group ecosystem, with short communication lines, streamlined processes and clear ownership. External partners such as frontend agency IO were seamlessly integrated into the workflow through comprehensive documentation and Postman examples provided by supersonic, enabling efficient and timely delivery of the project.

A more efficient buying journey

Result

In late November 2025, the new webshop for purchasing comfort services went live. Since then, the efficiency of the purchasing process has improved significantly. The average time to complete a purchase decreased by 34% in December 2025 compared to September 2025, indicating a smoother customer journey.

In addition, the funnel completion rate stands at 50.4%, meaning that more than half of visitors who start the purchasing process complete it successfully. These KPIs confirm that the new platform delivers a better user experience, which also has a positive impact on sales performance.

Thanks to clear API documentation and examples provided by supersonic, the frontend was delivered faster than anticipated. BAC benefited from lower overhead and a proactive, well-coordinated team. This resulted in a future-proof, scalable platform built on commercetools, enabling data-driven operations and supporting further expansion. Through efficient collaboration between supersonic, IdentIT and nFuse within the Cronos/Xplore ecosystem, combined with the integration of external partners, the project was delivered smoothly.
